A crown is a cap or covering for a tooth. It is used when your tooth is discoloured, cracked or broken, heavily filled or if fillings have been lost. There are many different types of dental crowns available in our JSP Dental Clinic.Dr.Sujith Pandiaraj will advise the best option depending on the location of the crown. They may recommend a ceramic, resin or sometimes even gold crowns. He will use the modern technology to match the new crown to the shape of your existing teeth and their colour.

Types of dental crowns
  • Metal Ceramic
when the tooth has lost its structural integrity, it will not have the strength to withstand the forces of chewing and biting. It needs to be restored with a crown that covers the tooth completely as well as resembles the original complete structure of the tooth. It provides the strength that tooth needs for its grinding and chopping functions. They are also designed to look like the natural tooth and feel like the natural tooth. Conventionally these crowns have been made with metal with a ceramic coating to resemble the tooth.

  • Zirconia
Recently the CAD CAM industry have adapted industrial zirconia to match the tooth properties and nowadays, more precise, metal free zirconia crowns are in vogue.

  • Precious Metal
The metal used for the coping or the inside of the crown can be a base metal or precious metal. Precious metals cause less allergic reactions and gum discolourations. Full gold crowns are also desired by some.

A dental bridge is a ceramic structure, spanning the gap left by a missing or extracted tooth. A ceramic tooth (pontic) is fused between two or more porcelain crowns on either side of the missing tooth that serve as anchors. The anchor teeth are shaped to accommodate the crowns and then a bridge is bonded securely over these teeth. Your dentist Dr.Sujith Pandiaraj will take an impression or a digital scan of your mouth and then using technology and training will design a ceramic tooth to insert between the two existing crowned teeth. The pontic tooth and the crowns on either side are matched to the colour and the shape of your existing teeth.
